As a building designer or draftsperson you'll be developing design briefs and concepts for sustainable residential and small scale commercial building projects. This is an exciting job where you can see your designs come to life and become part of the landscape!

In this course you'll gain high level skills using industry standard building information modelling software and programs;  and learn how to produce concept drawings, models and documentation required for planning and approvals; research and apply information to drawings and reports including environmental, heritage and other compliance requirements; provide administrative support for design projects including data collection and storage and file management; principles of energy efficient design and sustainability; Australian building codes and regulations; and industry occupational health and safety requirements.

Build on the skills obtained in the Certificate IV in Residential Drafting

The Diploma of Building Design builds on the skills obtained in the Certificate IV in Residential Drafting and provides more drafting and design experience in Revit (CAD software) for residential and commercial small-scale building projects.

You will cover principles of energy efficient design and sustainability for design projects and occupational health and safety requirements for this booming industry.

Once you've completed this Diploma you will be able to apply your skills to diverse building design projects which may incorporate residential, commercial, public or industrial projects including new buildings and renovations.

When you complete this course, you will be ready for a career in  building design. You will have the skills and knowledge to apply your skills to diverse building design projects. You will further develop their drafting expertise and design capabilities to design, draft and document plans, specifications and documentation for buildings of all classifications, as defined in the NCC, to a maximum floor area of 2,000 m², excluding those of Type A construction.

Practice at this level is underpinned by the ability to analyse and synthesise information from a range of sources to generate design solutions. Practitioners work without supervision and may specialise in residential, commercial, public or industrial projects including new buildings and renovations.

Licensing requirements apply to building design in some states or territories.
