This qualification provides trainees with the basic skills and knowledge essential in agricultural production. A trainee undertaking this role will acquire a broad range of skills in one or more agricultural sectors, such as broad acre cropping (e g. grains, sugarcane, etc.) and livestock (e.g. sheep, beef, horses etc.). You can then choose to specialise in one of these areas: Livestock, crops or mixed livestock crops, cattle production, cattle handling, fencing, maintenance and repair of basic machinery, pen riding and much more.

What will I learn? 

  • Tending livestock
  • Planting crops and harvesting crops
  • Mustering, moving and penning up livestock
  • Driving a range of farm vehicles including tractors
  • Controlling weeds and pests
  • Applying chemicals
  • Providing support for basic repair of plant and machinery
  • Performing routine maintenance including basic fencing and irrigation.
  • Cattle production – intensive, semi- intensive
  • Materials for handling cattle, cattle identification
  • Branding, ear marking and ear tags
  • Dehorning both chemical and mechanical methods
  • Castration, dips and injecting cattle and much more

<p>The Certificate II in Agriculture is an entry-level course suitable for students who wish to try their hand in cattle station operations. Participants will learn through hands-on training, reflecting the cycle of work on a cattle station.</p>
<h5>Participants will undertake a range of activities including:</h5>
<ul>
<li>Preparing for the mustering season</li>
<li>Livestock mustering, handling and husbandry activities</li>
<li>End-of-year maintenance</li>
</ul>
<p>Students will gain comprehensive knowledge of animal handling techniques including horsemanship and cattle management, fencing, station and machinery maintenance, and weed management skills. This qualification can lead participants on an exciting path from year 1 stockman, to head stockman and eventually, station manager.</p>
